A girl looks at a world whose rules existed long before she did. She must find her place in this world, but the price of belonging is not yet visible. A child is not born knowing who they are supposed to be. They absorb the language, values, fears and ideas of a good life held by those around them. Along with care and knowledge, limitations are passed on that later go unnoticed. The painting considers a moment when becoming oneself and becoming like others are still difficult to distinguish. It also questions the responsibility of earlier generations: do we give a child a world in which to grow, or a ready-made mould into which they must fit?
